Filmclub Sunset Boelelaan: La Haine

Join the second edition of the Film Club Sunset Boelelaan!

In this politically inspired film club, we will explore a different political theme or case study through the powerful medium of cinema. Once per month, we will screen a new release, a cult classic, or a deep cut.

All films have a specific societal or political value that will be explored before the screening through a short lecture from an engaged expert in the film’s subject matter, whether that be a professor, an professional in the field, or a student. In each screening, we will explore how cinema is shaped by politics - and vice versa - and learn about a wide range of countries and time periods through film. If you are passionate about cinema, or enjoy learning about politics through the big screen, this club is for you!

This month we will be viewing Mathieu Kassovitz's La Haine (1995).

This screening will be introduced by Samuel Ornstein, lecturer and researcher in Political Science and one of the founders of the Filmclub Sunset Boelelaan. As a lecturer, he is dedicated to educating bachelor's students about the fundamentals of political life both through thorough empirical analysis and critical theoretical reflection and as a researcher, his focus is on examining attitudes towards political contestation and polarisation, as well as the connection between media, communication and political attitudes. Samuel Ornstein and his collague Merijn Tax set up the filmclub to combine their shared passions for film and political science.

About La Haine: This French social thriller follows the lives of three friends in the suburbs in Paris. When one of their friends is arrested and assaulted by the police, they plan their revenge: a night full of riots.
