About the show
Director Feras Fayyad returned to his homeland of Syria to follow a dedicated team of female doctors who tirelessly care for the wounded in an underground hospital. The hospital in Ghouta, known as ‘the cave’, offers hope and security to the besieged citizens. Headed by the young female pediatrician Amani, who works side by side with male colleagues – a situation that is unthinkable in the aboveground, oppressive patriarchal world. The women have to deal with daily bombing, a chronic shortage of medicines and food and the constant threat of chemical attacks by the Syrian government army.
The Cave was a public favorite at the IDFA and, like the last film Last Men in Aleppo by director Feras Fayyad, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary.
