In 1867, the Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen wrote this poetic play about the fascinating character Peer Gynt. Peer is a good-for-nothing, a liar, a womanizer, and a dreamer who plans to become emperor of the world. After being banished from his village due to his own misconduct, he travels the world in search of himself. This leads to fantastic encounters with characters from Scandinavian folklore, such as the Troll King and the mysterious Button-Moulder. His dreams partially come true, but at the end of his life, Peer Gynt is faced with a mirror: has he ever truly been himself, or has he lived his life as a selfish troll?
