GRIFFIOEN MOVES TO VU CAMPUS

Amsterdam, 1 November 2021 - After more than 50 years VU Griffioen says goodbye to student campus Uilenstede. On 2 November, the theatre and course centre, affiliated with the VU University Amsterdam, will open its doors on the VU campus at De Boelelaan 1111 in Amsterdam.

From now on, VU Griffioen's theatre will be located in the hypermodern New University Building of the Vrije Universiteit, a sustainable and multifunctional building where education and recreation come together. Although the curtain has finally fallen on the old, familiar Griffioen Hall at Uilenstede, Griffioen is getting two brand new theatres in its place.

The Theatre 2 (the Great Hall) has a capacity of no less than 300 seats and Theatre 5 (the Small Hall), which will be available at the end of November, has a capacity of 140 seats. With performances on nearly every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, there are more activities than ever before. The broad theatre programme, consisting of cabaret, music, drama, and dance, will become even more diverse in the coming years.

The course centre already moved to the VU Campus in August and is now located on the sixth floor of the adjacent OZW building at De Boelelaan 1109. Over 70 different creative courses (dance, music, writing, painting and more) are being taught in 10 brand new classrooms.

More than theatre and courses

Not only VU Griffioen is opening its doors on campus. From 4 November onwards, Rialto, known for its 100-year old film theatre on the Ceintuurbaan, will be showing the best films every day in four state-of-the-art cinemas.

In the new VU ART SCIENCE gallery, artists are inspired by science and vice versa. From 12 November you can see their opening exposition 0 Starting From Zero. In this exhibition a special collection of artworks shows us the different aspects of the number 0.

This month, Rialto and Griffioen are also opening a theatre café: Bar Boele. Bar Boele will be the living room of the campus - a place to get inspired, to meet with friends or to have a drink after a nice theatre or film performance until late in the evening. In addition to food and drink, the café will also host performances, exhibitions, festivals, and other special programmes.
